Two greater Boston “cleantech” startups awarded $175k for their work
A relatively new industry, “clean tech” or “clean technology,” is all about businesses trying to achieve environmental stability through their work. Organizations, like the Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator (IN2), are focused on helping early-stage “cleantech” startups by awarding grants.
IN2 awarded two such Massachusetts organizations — FORGE in Somerville and Browning the Green Space in Boston — with $175,000 to support the growth of their respective companies.
FORGE nonprofit connects entrepreneurs with manufacturers in Western Massachusetts
Some entrepreneurs come into Kevin Moforte’s office with an idea sketched on a napkin.
Others bring more sophisticated plans and prototypes.
Either way, Moforte — FORGE’S director in Western Massachusetts — is boosting the regional economy by brokering relationships between entrepreneurs and businesses.
How to start sailing cheaply and easily
One community sailing center has offered affordable, accessible sailing since 1946. Community Boating Inc. (CBI) in Boston is the nation’s oldest public sailing organization, with a fleet of more than 120 sailboats. Its programs teach people of all abilities to sail, paddle and windsurf on the Charles River — and encourage volunteerism.
FORGE Continues to Connect Innovators and Manufacturers
“There are over 7,000 manufacturers right here in Massachusetts. A lot of people don’t recognize that,” said Laura Teicher, executive director of FORGE, adding that the innovation economy has also long been one of the Bay State’s strengths. “Right here in Massachusetts, two of our economic powerhouses are innovation and manufacturing. And FORGE is really the first organization to focus on bringing the two together to work collaboratively, which has a lot of fantastic impacts for both the innovator and the manufacturers.”
